4-Day Ngorongoro Crater & Lake Manyara Safari

Overview

This 4-day safari covers two of Tanzania’s well-known wildlife areas, Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Lake Manyara National Park. The Ngorongoro Crater, a protected UNESCO site, is home to a wide range of animals, including rare and endangered species. Lake Manyara, bordered by a steep escarpment and the lake itself, supports various habitats and is known for its lions that occasionally rest in trees.

Throughout this safari, you’ll travel through scenic terrain, observe a variety of animal species, and stay in well-located lodges. The itinerary is flexible and can be adjusted to fit your travel plans.

Itinerary

Day 1: Travel to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

In the morning, your driver/guide will meet you in Arusha and provide a short briefing about the trip. You’ll then begin your drive toward Ngorongoro. The route passes through the Ardai Plains, Karatu, and the village of Mto wa Mbu, leading up to the highlands.

Upon arrival, check in at your lodge. Spend the afternoon and evening at leisure.

Day 2: Safari Drive Inside Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast, enter the Crater for a half-day tour, with a packed lunch provided. The floor of this caldera supports many animal species, including lions, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, and a variety of antelope. The Crater is also a significant site for the preservation of globally at-risk species.

Aside from wildlife, the region is recognized for historical discoveries that have provided insight into early human life. Return to your lodge in the early afternoon to relax and enjoy dinner.

Day 3: Travel to Lake Manyara National Park

After breakfast, check out and begin your journey toward Lake Manyara. Upon arrival, check in at your lodge and have lunch. In the afternoon, head into the park for a wildlife drive lasting until around 6:00 PM.

Lake Manyara National Park is located between the lake and a steep escarpment. It is known for its lions that may rest in tree branches and for its birdlife, particularly flamingos which appear in large numbers during the rainy season. The park is home to over 400 bird species, with many present year-round.

Day 4: Return to Arusha and Departure

After breakfast, check out and begin your return drive to Arusha. An optional lunch can be arranged at a local restaurant. Following lunch, you’ll be transferred to either your hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport to conclude your trip.
